Description
Analysis on unsteady mass and energy balances. "Lumped" and "distributed" parameter systems. Instrumentation and technique for measurement of the main process variables: temperature, pressure, flow rate and level. Valves and actuators; Control valve sizing. Technical documentation of process plants and control systems: block diagram, process flow diagram, outline of P&ID. The Laplace transform and the transfer function. Mathematical representation of simple linear dynamic systems. Basics of process control: the feedback control loop, control strategies and hierarchy. Controllers: types and tuning techniques.
Educational Goals
To give the students preliminary and basic knowledge in order to approach process plant regulation and automatic control.
Prerequisites
Basic math on Differntial Calculus. Mastering macroscopic mass and energy balances at steady state and under transient conditions. Fundamentals of Transport Phenomena.
Partitioning
No partitioning
Teaching methods
lectures, manually worked or slide-based practice classes, problem solving with Control Station® Loop-Pro software.
Procedures for verifying
Written tests, presentation of a simple project work based on the use of Control Station® Loop-Pro software.
